GEOKON, INCORPORATED exhibited at the ICOLD 2015 annual conference, held in the scenic and resilient city of Stavanger, Norway, where over 1000 attendees enjoyed the extended daylight hours of mid-June.
Stavanger struggled as a small fishing port for centuries, but whose deep harbor allowed it to become vital center for the sardine industry, but also exposed it to a swift Nazi takeover prior to World War II. More recently, Stavanger became the energy capital of Norway when oil was discovered in 1969 beneath the North Sea, and today the city has shops, museums, and restaurants in its quaint and historic downtown.
The proximity of the conference to several dams, as well as some of the best known fjords in Norway, allowed for interesting and scenic field trips, one of which was to Preikestolen, aka Pulpit Rock, a natural 25 × 25 m tabletop of rock that overlooks the Lysefjord. Tens of thousands make the 2-hour climb each year to the top of Preikestolen, where daring visitors can dangle their legs over the edge, nearly 2000 feet above the water.
Augmenting the technical agenda, cultural music and culinary ICOLD events in the city provided the attendees with a memorable Scandinavian experience.
