Case History May 2005

StarTrak, LLC

Since November 2002, Geokon has supplied StarTrak, LLC with modified Model 4000 Vibrating Wire Strain Gages that are used for the remote monitoring of rail cars. The strain gage is welded to the “bolster” of the carriage to provide load weights with an accuracy of 3%.

Specifically, the strain gage is used to monitor the “net load” weight of any type of rail car, which helps determine the true inventory of its contents. As such, it is part of a series of sensors, connected to dataloggers, which are used to monitor other functions such as car location, speed, direction, and estimated time of arrival. The system, called “HealthTrak”, gathers information from individual rail cars and relays it via satellite to their Web Server providing real-time analysis. A wireless link allows remote configuration of trigger levels and reporting times.

StarTrak, LLC has been in the monitoring business since 1993. They currently monitor hundreds of rail cars around the globe and are applying the same technology to tractor-trailer trucks and barges.
