Geokon takes great pride in meeting customer needs when nonstandard geotechnical instruments are required. While these products rarely appear in our product literature, more often than not we are working on a custom design for someone on any given day.

The US Army Corps of Engineers and Reed & Reed Co., with Geokon’s help, recently installed four (4) custom waterproof Model 4900 Vibrating Wire Load Cells on tiebacks for a sheet pile bulkhead located in a tidal zone on the New Hampshire seacoast.

Since the 200-ton-capacity load cells would be submerged for long periods, due to tidal effects, the entire system, including the terminal box, had to be 100% waterproof and corrosion-resistant.

Geokon designed the load cells with a sealed bearing plate cover and special waterproof stainless steel “terminal” canisters to house the GK-403 Readout Box connector. This allowed safe and easy access from the edge of the sheet pile for periodic manual readings.
